Think Green! Post #5!

Think about this…

One way to keep your vehicle’s fuel mileage as high as possible is to minimize the unnecessary baggage rolling around in your trunk or back seat. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce your miles per gallon by 2%. Achieving the best fuel mileage possible is good for your wallet and also reduces the burden on our precious natural resources.

Think Green! Post #4!

Think about this…

Over time the average home collects a variety of toxic chemicals: half-used bottles of glue, furniture polish, paints, batteries, ammonia-based cleaners, and aerosol cans to name a few. Don’t toss them in the garbage! Dispose of them responsibly.

Green is the New Bright Idea!

Check-out this link– you can select a specific item, i.e. motor oil, submit that entry and the site will give you a list of area businesses which will gladly accept your hazardous waste.

GreenPrint Denver– click here for an item pull-down list of where to expose of hazardous products.

You can also arrange a pick-up of unusable household hazardous waste by calling 1-800-449-7587.

The World’s Top 15 GREEN Hotels and Resorts Includes a Resort/Spa Right Here in Colorado!

Published by under Real Estate

Nestled right in the middle of these incredible far and away, almost unheard of green travel destinations is Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO! As an environmentally conscious individual and Realtor with the GREEN designation, I am thrilled to have discovered this tidbit of knowledge and thought I would share it with you.

Check-out the complete Traveler’s Digest list here: World’s Top 15 GREEN Hotels and Resorts

According to the Travelers Digest, Devil’s Thumb Ranch is an environmentally friendly year-round Ranch resort and spa offering newly built (very green) cabins in the woods, a Lodge, fine dining and an array of winter and summer outdoor and wilderness recreation activities.

Here is a link to the resorts website, Devil’s Thumb Ranch and their GREEN Thumb!, where they describe just what’s so green about them! :) My favorite part is that they have committed to only building on 80 acres of their 5000 acres of wilderness, leaving the raw land to the elk, deer, moose, trout, coyote and fox population. My fellow furry associates and I really appreciate that, check this out! Fellow furry friends help me sell Denver Real Estate!

These beautiful animals have the best carbon footprint around!

Have a great green day!

Think Green! Post #3!

Think about this…

The next time you stop at an ATM, say “no” to a receipt. They may be small, but with over 300,000 ATM’s nationwide dispensing countless receipts daily, the little slips add up to one big pile of wasted paper. Instead of requesting a paper receipt, use your bank or credit union’s website to check and confirm your account activity, before or after your ATM transactions.

Think about this…

Cut the amount of energy used to heat and cool your home (and save money too) by investing in a programmable thermostat. you can lower (or raise) the set temperature while you are away at work during the day or bundled up in bed at night. Most programmable thermostats allow you to set weekday and weekend routines and will also hold the temperature steady while you’re gone on vacation.

Think Green! Posting #1 in a long series!

As a Realtor with the National Association of Realtor GREEN designation, I’ve got plenty of ideas to share that will help us all get a little greener in our homes, our environment and in our wallets! Each week (maybe even more than that as I have so many to share!) I will share an idea, posting it here and certainly on Facebook too! If you have any ideas that you would like to share, please feel free to send them to me and I will post them too!

Green is the new bright idea!

Nothing feels better than a long, hot shower on a cold winter’s day. However, standard showerheads can use between 4 and 8 gallons of water every minute! Installing a low-flow showerhead, which will restrict flow to around 2 gallons a minute while maintaining water pressure, will save you money on your water bill and conserve our most precious natural resource: water.

Dreaming about a GREEN Christmas?

Content Source: RISMEDIA, November 30, 2010

It was Bing Crosby who immortalized a “White Christmas” in his 1942 hit single, but these days more and more eco-conscious consumers are dreaming of a green holiday season instead. If you are looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint this year, consider these tips from Dedee DeLongpre Johnston, director of sustainability at Wake Forest University.

Use Sustainable Gift Wrap: Consider saving and reusing holiday wrapping paper just as your grandmother once did. Or wrap your gifts in pretty fabric that can be used for other purposes. “In my family, we re-gift gift bags again and again,” DeLongpre Johnston says. “Pillowcases can also make pretty gift wraps if done right.”

Decorate with Energy-Efficient Lighting: While many people still use standard incandescent holiday bulbs, decorative LED lights are now available in a variety of holiday shapes and colors. In addition to having a much longer life span than standard lights, LEDs also reduce fire risks because they stay cool to the touch. “This would be one of the areas where you might spend a little more upfront, but save in the long run,” DeLongpre Johnston says. Want to be even greener? Use light-sensor timers to turn your lights on and off.

Give Consumable Gifts: Most Americans don’t need any more stuff or, as DeLongpre Johnston points out, we’re all “stuffed out.” So consider giving the gift of services instead, or goods that can be consumed. Some ideas include massages, pedicures, tickets to sporting events, gift certificates for restaurants and other similar pampering treats. Other options would be to give consumable gifts that keep on giving all year long like a membership to a Wine of the Month Club or a monthly delivery of seasonal fruits grown locally. Says DeLongpre Johnston: “It doesn’t mean you have to be any less generous.”

Make a Donation in Someone’s Name: If someone has a passion in life, giving to an organization that supports their cause can be very meaningful. Whether you donate a flock of chicks to support a hungry family through Heifer International or fund the planting of trees through American Forest, you will be giving a gift that gives back and helps preserve the environment at the same time. 10 Ways to Make Any Room Look Larger

Great tips for home buyers for their new home and for home sellers who are preparing their home for the market! Home sellers! As a part of my home listing services, I include a thorough staging walk-thru of your home– starting with the outside of the home and then each room inside. I will help you assess how to best prepare your home for the market as seen from the eyes of prospective home buyers. Please give me a call if you are thinking about buying or selling a home, I would appreciate the opportunity of sharing how I can best be of service to you!

10 Designer Tricks on How to Make a Small Room Look Larger

Making small rooms appear larger

1. Use a light color scheme rather than bright or dark. Pastels, neutrals and white are all color possibilities. My thoughts: A dark paint color in a room can make a room feel warm and cozy which might be the look you want!

2. Use a monochromatic color scheme on the furniture, rugs and walls. Select different shades and textures of your single color. My thoughts: This works great– I have used it in a rental property of mine and have suggested this tip to home sellers preparing their home for the market. One color and shades of that color create continuity in the room.

3. Lighting is a key element in opening up a space. Recessed spot lighting is visually appealing and is perfect for a small space. A torchiere light is great for bouncing light off of the ceiling and back down on the room. Skylights and solar tubes are natural alternatives for adding light to a room. My thoughts: Don’t forget about different levels of lighting. i.e. adding under the counter lighting and/or above the cabinets can help scale a kitchen vertically.

4. Limit the number of accessories to avoid the cluttered feeling. My thoughts: This is practically #1 when I do a walk-thru with a home seller. Too many chotchki type items around the home, on the wall and even on the refrigerator can create a messy cluttering feeling.

5. The floor and the ceiling are the fifth and sixth walls of every room. Light-colored flooring such as light oak or a light-colored carpet will make the room appear brighter and more open. The same applies to the ceiling—use a light color or white to “open up” the space above. My thoughts: Exactly, don’t let your painter paint the ceiling the same colors as the walls especially if the wall color is dark! If you don’t want to leave the ceiling white, use the lightest color on the palette for your wall colors or move to the palette next to your color to find a light color for the ceiling.
